Welcome to Uno Rules

On our dedicated Uno website, you'll find everything you need to know about one of the most beloved card games in the world. Learn the rules of Uno, discover how to score points, and get tips from experienced players who have enjoyed playing Uno for years. We'll also explore different rule variations, explain how special cards work, and when it's best to use them strategically.

Wondering why our site covers everything related to Uno?

Because here, you will learn the rules of Uno in the simplest way possible. We won’t bore you with long explanations; instead, we’ll focus on the game itself and present it in the clearest, most straightforward manner.

Let's Get Straight to the Point. What Do You Need to Start Playing Uno?

It's really simple – you only need 3 things:

  • At least 2 players, with a maximum of 10 players.
  • An Uno card deck.
  • A pen and paper to keep track of the score.

Uno Scoring

All numbered cards (0-9) are worth their face value. Special cards have the following points:

  • Draw 2 = 20 points
  • Reverse card = 20 points
  • Skip card = 20 points
  • Wildcard = 50 points
  • Wild Draw 4 = 50 points

Uno Cards – What Are They For?

The Uno deck consists of 112 cards, split into 4 colors: yellow, green, red, and blue. Here's how the deck is divided:

  • 19 red cards – numbered 0 to 9
  • 19 blue cards – numbered 0 to 9
  • 19 green cards – numbered 0 to 9
  • 19 yellow cards – numbered 0 to 9
  • 8 "Skip" cards – two of each color
  • 8 "Reverse" cards – two of each color
  • 8 "Draw 2" cards – two of each color
  • 8 black cards – 4 "Wild" cards and 4 "Wild Draw 4" cards
  • 4 blank cards (these can be used as replacements or as custom cards for house rules). In standard Uno, you can set these aside.

Uno Special Cards – How to Use Them?

As mentioned earlier, apart from numbered cards, there are also special cards. Here's how and when to use them:

  • Draw 2 = The next player must draw two cards.
  • Reverse card = The direction of play is reversed.
  • Skip card = The next player skips their turn.
  • Wildcard = You choose the color for the next round.
  • Wild Draw 4 = You choose the color for the next round, and the next player must draw 4 cards and lose their turn.

How to Start the Game?

To begin, each player is dealt 7 cards. Make sure to shuffle the deck before dealing. The remaining cards are placed in the center of the table, forming the draw pile. The player who dealt the cards takes the top card from the draw pile and places it face-up on the table, showing everyone which color the game will start with.

Who Starts the Game?

The player sitting to the left of the dealer starts the game. This player has three options to begin their turn:

  • Play a card that matches the color of the face-up card.
  • Play a card that matches the number of the face-up card.
  • Play a card that matches the symbol of the face-up card.

For example, if the face-up card is a red 5, you can play a red card, any card with the number 5, or a wild card.

Important: You can only play the "Wild Draw 4" card if you don't have a card of the same color, number, or a regular wild card.

What if You Don't Want to Play a Card?

You don't have to play a card even if you have a matching one in your hand. However, if you choose not to play any card and you have a card that matches the face-up card, you must draw one card from the draw pile.

What If You Don't Have a Matching Card?

If you don’t have a matching card in your hand, you must draw one card. If the card you draw matches, you can play it immediately. If it doesn’t match, you must wait until your next turn.

How Do You Win?

To win the game, the main objective is to get rid of all your cards. However, before you play your last card, you must remember to say "UNO" out loud. If you forget to say "UNO" and another player catches you, you'll have to draw 4 cards. But, if no one notices your mistake, you can win the game.

Important Rules for Ending an Uno Game

  • The player MUST say "UNO" before placing their second-to-last card.
  • Your card must touch the table before anyone can penalize you for not saying "UNO."
  • If you place a card and forget to say "UNO," other players have until the next player plays their card to call you out. Once the next player plays a card, it's too late to penalize you.
  • You cannot stack +2 and +4 cards on top of each other.
  • "Stacking" (playing two identical cards at once or stacking a +2 or +4 to force the next player to draw more cards) is not allowed according to official rules. While this might come as a surprise to many players who enjoy this house rule, officially, stacking is not permitted.
